RFID has started penetrating the masses and now students will get a taste of RFID when during the month of August 8,500 RFID tags will be distributed for free to faculty and students at Slippery Rock University which can be attached to their respective cell phones. RFID is expected to make their lives easier as now they can pay for anything ranging from copier services to groceries at a touch of a button. Now there is no need for the students to carry their wallets along since RFID would do all the purchasing for them. Up till now students used to make purchases using photo ID cards which had a magnetic strip encoded with their user ID. These days you would surely find a cell phone in every student's pocket if not money and therefore the university decided that it would be a better option to embed this technology in the lives of the student so that their everyday purchases became easier.
These tags will be fixed on the inside cover of the battery compartment and when taken near merchant's sales terminal it will transmit an ID number linked to the Rock Dollar Account. The University is already in the process of signing merchants for this process. This will surely help in increasing the penetration of technology regarding which their seems to be an air of confusion all because of lack of knowledge but all this will be tackled when people start using it.
