RFID trial gets full marksBy Jul 12, 2007Trials of radio frequency identification (RFID) systems in the supply industry gained full marks at the end of a two-month test period, a company in charge of the initiative has stated. Located in Australia, the National EPC Network Demonstrator Project Extension involved electronic product code Gen 2 RFID tags attached to 3,300 wooden pallets which were then delivered to various recipients, reports Food Production Daily. The project was co-managed by GS1 Australia and Melbourne's RMIT University. A system provided by Telstra was in place to manage and share the data, which was also sent to truck drivers' personal digital assistants (PDAs). On receipt of the goods, each pallet's tag passed an RFID interrogator and the information was then sent to the PDAs and management software, with 100 per cent accuracy reported during the trial. Speaking about the benefits of the pilot, Maria Palazzolo - chief executive officer of GS1 Australia, which co-managed the test - said: "Everything is done electronically бн proving that RFID can be used to get a 100 per cent read rate is what gave us our proof of delivery." In related news, Heathrow Airport recently announced it is to trial the replacement of barcodes with RFID technology at selected check-in desks. TUV Product Service, part of the TÜV SÜD Group of companies with 1bn Euros turnover, in excess of 9,500 employees and 500 locations worldwide, is a leading producer of Compliance and Assurance Solutions for the RFID sector.
