All readers run the embedded Magellan ReaderServer™ application that provides the interface between the end user application and the tags. The ReaderServer™ is a TCP socket server application. It accepts multiple simultaneous connections from client applications. This is conceptually similar to any other network server, such as an e-mail or Web server. Client applications are run remotely via Ethernet or USB. A client application is any program which can establish a socket connection to the ReaderServer™. Application updates can be performed via an FTP server and a telnet server allows easy remote administration of any reader. With the commands that can be sent to a ReaderServer™, a client application uses the Python programming language to provide the command syntax. Most users and application developers do not need a knowledge of Python in order to work with readers. Many applications will involve only calling the reader specific functions. Advanced developers will be able to take advantage of the flexibility of the programming environment when they need to. Python is an interpreted, interactive, object-oriented programming language. When interacting with the application monitor server a client application has access to a full Python interpreter. It supports many commands which can be used to monitor or change the operating environment. Magellan is currently running version 2.3.5 on the readers.
